Republic and hearts of Ireland midfielder Glenn Whelan admits hed offers from clubs overseas before going to Hearts to increase his odds of playing Euro 2020.
Aston Villa after their promotion into the Premier League in the summer released whelan , before then joining Hearts on a one-year-contract in August.
The 35-year-old admitted he consulted with Ireland manager Mick McCarthy prior to deciding which team to join in a bid to extend his career.
Whelan said:I talked to the supervisor. I had one or two choices overseas that were really interesting at that time.
The boss wasnt too keen to be truthful since the league wasnt likely as powerful as where I am playing now or at any time I had been in. He needs me trying to perform as much and as large as I can.
When it had been down to cash I would be gone – in sunlight somewhere in the minute. However, for me its never been about cash or making a wage.
I am happy playing football and thats all I want to do, so for me it was all about getting the club right for your family members and to get an opportunity playing Ireland.
Should Ireland qualify for the European Championships their collection fixtures will probably be staged in Dublins Aviva Stadium and also Whelan insists when choosing Hearts this was a large consideration for him.
He explained:I want to play for Ireland at the Euros, therefore that I spoke to some people and I think ultimately, Hearts was the perfect choice for me personally.
When I talked to the Hearts boss , I told him basically I wish to play as long as I am and as large as I can because I would like to have a great probability of qualifying and Id love to still be around and be a part of it.
I think itll suit me. The director at Hearts was really great to me, he has given me some time off to go and see the family and move and spend some time down there so it has been OK.
High in Group D currently sit with 11 points from their five games, however, they face tough competition from Switzerland and Denmark for both Euro 2020 qualification places that are automatic.
Whelan added:Were still miles away [qualifying]. We have got three games. The position that were in is an excellent position but we know which may be removed from us.
Its an important game away to Georgia. Get the ideal outcome there and that is going to give us confidence going in the other , but youve got to just take every match as it comes
